Memory Making Day in Fort Oglethorpe
As a mom, picking a family outing that everyone will enjoy is a challenge. But even our two little ones loved our recent day at Labor Day at the Post in Fort Oglethorpe.
Labor Day at the Post was a fun, nostalgic experience - having gone to it years ago when I was a kid. Nestled in the heart of historic Barnhardt Circle, the celebration held a unique charm that beckoned us back in time while embracing the present.
The journey began with the excitement of planning. My husband and I meticulously packed snacks, sunscreen, and the kids' favorite toys, gearing up for an adventure-filled day.
As soon as we parked our car - plenty of parking, by the way - we were greeted by the vibrant atmosphere. Later, an eclectic mix of live music featuring Confederate Railroad rumbled through the grounds, their throw-back country tunes transporting us to another era of boots and country that rocked! James Rogers - a Fort O native - struck a powerful longing for the days when things were simpler, and all Americans stood strong, proud, and together. The local talent, a wonderful surprise, brought an authentic touch to the stage, showcasing the area's artistic prowess.
As parents, our priority was ensuring the kids had a blast. The Kid's Zone, a lively hub of activities, became their haven. Their laughter and joy filled the air, from face painting to mini-games and storytelling sessions. Watching their faces light up made every moment worthwhile.
For me, the classic car show highlight of the day. The sight of vintage automobiles meticulously maintained was a tribute to craftsmanship and brought out the kid in my husband. The gleaming chrome and vibrant colors embraced by tree coverage and surrounded by classic architecture sparked conversations about history and design with fellow enthusiasts.
Fort Oglethorpe's history wasn't lost on us either, and we were eager to learn a part of Fort O’s story in the newly opened Welcome Center.
I shopped and got a huge jump on my Christmas list as dozens of local vendors' beckoned with an array of goods. We browsed through handmade crafts, local artisanal products, and savory treats, supporting the community while finding unique keepsakes to cherish.
Navigating the event with little ones had its challenges, but the sense of community and camaraderie among families was heartwarming. A shared appreciation for history created connections with fellow citizens and guests, turning strangers friends - at least for the day.
As the day wound down, we found a spot to relax and soak in the sunset hues of orange and purple, casting a serene glow over Barnhardt Circle. The echoes of music faded, leaving behind cherished memories. It's a memory we'll treasure, a reminder of the beauty found in embracing both the past and the present.
Till next year.
